Since 2008, HCC has operated under an institutional sustainability plan, developed by a group of faculty, staff, and administrators to help us to prepare our campus and our students for success in the 21st century. As members of KCTCS, we are also required to report every six months on sustainability-related advances at HCC.
In September of 2012, we joined the American Association of Sustainability in Higher Education, and became the first KCTCS campus to apply for a Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) evaluation. Information from that evaluation will be posted as soon as it is complete.
Also in September, we installed a photovoltaic array and have been able to incorporate data from the array into instruction in a number of courses. This plan was accepted by the National Wildlife Federation as a case study of exemplary practices in environmental and sustainability education.
