Students come to Hopkinsville Community College at all educational stages. Some students need to complete their GED, the high school equivalency diploma. Other students need help with pre-college courses to get ready for college-level work. Here's what HCC can offer you:
Any adult who did not complete high school can attend Adult Education to study for the GED® to earn the High School Equivalency Diploma. Additionally, any adult who wants to refresh his/her basic skills before enrolling at HCC and taking the COMPASS placement test may also use the adult education services. These services are available free of charge. Adult Education Services at Hopkinsville Community College is made possible through a collaboration with Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE).

Literacy Information
Help is also available through our Adult Education program for adult non-readers. Any adult interested in improving his/her reading skills can come into the HCC Technology Building, Room 205, any time during regular hours of operation. A reading assessment will be necessary, and then an instructional plan will be developed.
Volunteer tutors are used with the non-readers, and training is available for volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering to help someone learn to read should call (270) 707-3925.

Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE)
Your future is calling! Starting in 2014, there will be a new GED® test. The current version of the GED® test is expiring at the end of 2013 and your scores will expire too if you don't finish and pass the test by then. Finish the test now so you won't have to re-take the parts you've already passed.
The GED® is a battery of exams designed to measure skills and knowledge equal to a high school course of study. The five subject area tests which make up the GED® test battery are Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading. In order to earn a GED® diploma, an examinee must have a combined passing score of 2250 with a minimum score of 410 in each of the five subject areas. Those passing the GED® have demonstrated a level of knowledge equal to or greater than 40% of graduating high school seniors. To be eligible to take the GED® tests in Kentucky, the applicant must have a Kentucky address and be 19 years old or older OR have a Kentucky address, be at least 16 years old, and officially withdrawn from school for 90 days or have a 90 day waiver from the school superintendent. Some exemptions do apply. See your adult education provider for details. In addition, GED® applicants must pass an Official Practice Test (OPT) administered by the adult education staff in order to be eligible to register for the official GED® exam. HCC administers the GED® at 7:30 a.m. one Saturday of each month. Pre-registration is required. The deadline for all examinees to make a testing appointment is 4 p.m. on the Thursday before the Saturday test date. To register, applicants must submit the documentation they receive from the adult education staff as well as the GED® fee. The GED® test fee is $60 for the entire battery of tests. The fee for individual tests is $30 for Writing, $30 for Math, and $30 for any combination of Science, Social Studies, or Reading. The maximum test fee is $60 for any one test date.

The TABE Test is a test of reading and math skills that is required by many local employers for hiring consideration. If one does not do well on the TABE test, free remediation and an opportunity to re-test is available through our adult education services.

The Academic Foundations team at Hopkinsville Community College is in place to help students succeed who are entering the college environment with below-college-level skills. We serve students needing remediation in reading, writing, and mathematics with free Academic Foundations courses in math and literacy skills. Classes are available at various times at both campus locations. These classes may help you skip one or more developmental education-level courses based on a COMPASS retest.
