Enroll in a student success course.
HCC's three credit-hour student success course is called GEN 102 "Strategies for Academic Success."
File an academic plan.
HCC refers to an academic plans as a M.A.P. (My Academic Plan). Your assigned academic advisor will help you file a M.A.P. so that you may begin using Student Self-service to enroll in your classes.
Meet regularly with your assigned academic advisor.
New students meet with
Advising Center
representative. Returning students work with their assigned faculty advisor until successful completion of their academic plan.
Read college-issued email routinely.

Career and Transfer Center
offers numerous free services to assist you with career guidance and exploration, as well as job search skills. An extensive array of information is available related to two-year college to four-year university transfer.
Take advantage of free student support services such as tutoring.
A significant amount of no cost
academic assistance and tutoring
is available to you. Do not wait until the last minute. Explore available support services early in the semester/term.
Avoid missing classes.
Active participation in your classes is essential. One of the greatest contributors to poor academic performance is lack of regular class attendance. Do not be a statistic!
Get involved, make connections with faculty, staff, and other students.
There are endless opportunities to get involved on campus. Many
student activities and organizations
exist to help you meet other students and provide opportunities for leadership development.
Apply early for financial aid.
