The Youth Workforce Connections (YWC) program is funded by a federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) grant administered through the Pennyrile Area Development District (PADD) office. The YWC collaborates with the Adult Education Learning Center to offer GED assistance, career guidance and training, academic counseling, and employment services to area youths between the ages of 16 and 21 who are economically disadvantaged and face barriers to appropriate employment. The YWC sets up training programs that prepare participants for skilled jobs that are available in our community. Additionally, work experience and paid internship programs are available to assist youths in obtaining high-paying, skilled positions in the career of their choice. Funding through a WIA grant enables the YWC to pay these youths the prevailing wage for their position during the training period at a new job related to their career training. Therefore, the employer does not have to pay the new employee during this training period, providing the employer with an opportunity to assess the skills and abilities of the youth before deciding to put him or her on the payroll. Additionally, these youths are closely monitored, and the Youth Workforce Connections office serves as a resource for both the youth and the employer during this time. These services are available free of charge. Interested youths and area businesses are encouraged to contact Workforce Solutions to learn more about how they can benefit from the program.
