The Council on Postsecondary Education requires all public colleges and universities in Kentucky to have placement guidelines for entering students. The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) has adopted the COMPASS exam as its placement instrument.
The Compass Placement Test is designed to help you and your advisor decide which classes you should take as you begin coursework at Maysville Community and Technical College. It is important for you to prepare for the test to ensure that you are placed in the correct program sequence and minimize the cost of your education in terms of time and money. You can prepare for the placement test by requesting a copy of sample questions from the Assessment Center or Master Advising, or by accessing the ACT/Compass website. You may find additional help with the math portion of Compass.
COMPASS placement scores, adopted by KCTCS for writing, reading, and mathematics, will be used to place students in appropriate courses. Students will be given a copy of their COMPASS report after testing and will schedule an appointment with a Master Advisor at that time.
Exemptions from COMPASS testing will be granted utilizing the following guidelines:
Students with ACT sub-scores of 18 or higher (22 in math) should bring a copy of their ACT report to their local Testing Center. Students with sub-scores above the cutoff in all three areas should contact their local MCTC campus to schedule an advising appointment with an academic advisor.
Students with sub-scores below the cutoff should contact the testing center at their local MCTC campus to schedule a placement test appointment and an advising appointment.
Test dates are scheduled each semester during early registration and regular registration. Current semester testing schedule.
