264 HCC students participated in the math assessment. HCC Chief Academic Officer Dr. Kristin Wilson explained that HCC has elected to utilize the CAAP assessment in an effort to demonstrate student learning. “During the college’s recent reaccreditation process, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) recommended that HCC adopt assessment practices which help faculty understand learning and improve teaching. On a national level, a total of 27,803 students participated in the test with HCC’s students,” Wilson continued. “Our students’ scores are very competitive compared with those across the U.S. We believe this speaks well of the educational opportunities available at HCC.”

CAAP is the standardized, nationally normed assessment program from ACT. According to the ACT website, the CAAP assessment enables postsecondary institutions to assess, evaluate, and enhance student learning outcomes and general education program outcomes.

“We are very pleased with these CAAP scores,” stated HCC Math Department Discipline Coordinator and Professor Pat Riley. “I’ve always believed that HCC has an outstanding math faculty. These results help to confirm this belief. However, credit should also be given to our students. They are hard-working and dedicated to their education. They are a pleasure to work with,” Riley continued.

HCC recently implemented a math redesign in the developmental math area by revising the teaching delivery to a modified Emporium model that is self-paced to the individual student. This model allows students to move at their own learning speed. This model allows students, who have the ability, to move through the developmental courses quickly to college-level math courses.
The Cayce’s approached the Hopkinsville Community College Foundation with the idea of establishing a scholarship to honor the late Mrs. Cayce. With a passion and heart for the health and well-being of Christian County, demonstrated by their professional work in their practices in pharmacy and advanced registered nurse practice, the Cayce’s established a fund to support nurse education.

Focused on the non-traditional student in HCC’s nursing program, and with support from various members of their extended family, Cayce Mill Supply Company and AmerisourceBergen Services Corporation, the Cayce’s intend to advance the growth of this scholarship opportunity.

The first awards of the $500 scholarship were recently made to Erica Moyer of Oak Grove, Kentucky and Melissa Johnsa of Hopkinsville. All academic scholarship applications at HCC include student essays, and Ms. Moyer and Ms. Johnsa both wrote compelling arguments for their selection, according to Helen Cayce. Ms. Moyer wrote, “ I chose HCC’s nursing program because of its great reputation and outstanding NCLEX pass rate. In this program, I feel I’m constantly being challenged and kept on my toes.”

Ms. Johnsa’s comments reflected those of her fellow student and awardee. “The nursing program is my full time job. I take an enormous amount of pride in being a nursing student at HCC.”

Yvette Eastham, Executive Director of the HCC Foundation noted that support of nursing and allied health programs at the local college continues to be a top priority. “As we continue to look toward the future for HCC, we commend donors like the Cayce’s who have partnered with the Foundation for the educational and economic development of our community.”
Students can view and order graduation pictures online

Students that participated in Friday's commencement can see previews of their graduation pictures online by following these three easy steps.
Additionally, Mr. Carew won the Chancellor’s Excellence Award in undergraduate studies for the University of California system.

Of his time at HCC, Mr. Carew relates, “Thank you for all your guidance and support while I was at Fort Campbell. I remember walking the halls of the Ed Center like it was last quarter. HCC was where this all started for me and you all are the reflection of my success.”

Mr. Carew represents what is best and honorable about our student soldiers,” stated HCC Interim President Lake. “During his time at HCC, starting with the rank of bottom line private, he not only completed his coursework, he deployed twice, and rose to the rank of SGT E-5 before discharge. His great success beyond our college is a true inspiration."

The event will begin with lunch and a meet/greet from noon until 12:30, followed by a lecture from 12:30 to 1:30. Western Kentucky University (WKU) Associate Professor of sociology Dr. Anne Onyekwuluje (On Yea Kool La j) will be featured.

Dr. Onyekwuluje received her PhD from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Her life and work supports the concept of community-based culture with an enlarged capacity for mutual respect and care for humanity.

“These days, I come as a post-civil rights activist; one who balances teaching, research, and service in the creation of a live conversation about equality with those who gather within the sound of my voice. As an academic leader and activist in the diversity movement of the twenty-first century, I stand in the classroom and within the community walls to speak of the equality and freedoms of a democracy charging the air we breathe. I understand how the discourse not only pulls us together, but becomes our articulate collective authentication to change the world. For more than 25 years I have been a cultural voice for equality and justice; teaching, writing, and speaking out against racism, sexism, classism, and organized inequities of all kinds,” explained Dr. Onyekwuluje.

This event is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be provided.
The program, Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), is administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

To date, approximately 270 higher education institutions have registered as STARS participants. HCC is proud to be the first institution in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and the thirty-second community college in North America to be rated. A quarter of the institutions that report data to STARS achieve the bronze rating, which indicates basic sustainable behaviors across each of the areas evaluated: education and research, institutional operations, and planning, administration and engagement.

HCC’s Sustainability Committee Co-Chair Kristy Howell praised the institution’s rating. “Becoming the first KCTCS institution to track our hard work in sustainability with STARS is very exciting. Hopkinsville now has a solid foundation on which to build, and working through the submission has given us many ideas for improving our dedication to our campus and our community,” explained Howell.

HCC has operated under an institutional sustainability plan since 2008 and under the KCTCS plan since 2010.

Dr. Patrick Lake, interim president of HCC, supports Hopkinsville’s hard work. “Improving institutional sustainability is something both KCTCS and HCC have focused on for several years,” stated Lake. “Completing our STARS submission is a notable achievement, both as a member of KCTCS and for our continuous improvement as a campus.”

Unlike other rating or ranking systems, the STARS program is open to all institutions of higher education in the U.S. and Canada, and the criteria that determine a STARS rating are transparent and accessible to anyone. Because STARS is a program based on credits earned, it allows for both internal comparisons as well as comparisons with similar institutions.
It’s not too late to register for spring classes at HCC

It’s not too late to register for spring semester 2013 classes at Hopkinsville Community College (HCC). Spring II classes begin March 18.
HCC to go tobacco-free in January 2013

Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) will join the growing list of U.S. colleges and universities to adopt a tobacco-free campus policy, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

HCC administrators site their commitment to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, employees and visitors as a major rationale for naming HCC a tobacco-free institution.

Smoking has long been prohibited in HCC’s buildings. HCC implemented a smoking policy in 2008 that outlined four designated smoking areas. The new 2013 tobacco-free policy will extend to prohibit all tobacco or e-tobacco products from being used on any college property (owned or leased) or in any college facility.

A report issued by the United States Surgeon General concluded that there is no acceptable level of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

“In light on the recent passage of the Hopkinsville City smoking ordinance, it felt like the ideal time for our college to reevaluate the tobacco usage policy, “explained HCC President Jim Selbe. “A majority of HCC faculty, staff, and students do not smoke or use tobacco products. We also have to consider that we have the presence of underage students on campus.”

Every member of the HCC community shares equally in the responsibility for adhering to and respectfully enforcing the tobacco-free policy. College officials will continue to examine policies at other higher education institutions and develop its own enforcement plan over the next year or more.

According to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation (ANRF), there are smoke-free colleges and universities in virtually every state. Nationwide, over 600 colleges and universities have tobacco-free policies. As of October 2012, the ANRF has 12 Kentucky colleges listed as having smoke or tobacco-free policies.
Becoming a regional kick-off for the holidays, the 6th Annual Hopkinsville Community College Foundation Gala Scholarship Auction is just days away. Scheduled Friday, November 2, at the James E. Bruce Convention Center, beginning with a silent auction during social hour at 6:00 p.m., revelers and benefactors alike are set to be feted with a gourmet meal and grand items to be sold, all for the benefit of students of HCC.

According to Jackie Jones, HCC Foundation Board Vice-President, and chair of its Gala Scholarship Auction, auction items in every price range will be available for purchase next Friday. “ We have everything from Attorney General Jack Conway’s six-person table and box in Churchill Downs Turf Club, to the Honorable Carroll Hubbard’s UK versus Florida basketball game tickets. We will auction a 10-day trip to the coastal village of Oostende, Belgium with splendid European accommodations, and a week-long vacation on Alabama’s Orange beach in a luxury 2-bed, 2-bath condo. There are also items like weather radios, cookbooks, fine crystal, and tickets to TPAC and Keeneland. We will have something for everyone,” Jones declared.

The assets of the Foundation have grown in excess of $2 million dollars. For the 2012-2013 academic year, the Foundation will award $80,147.00 in scholarships. An additional $7,987.00 in support will be provided to the college for allied health programs and for the Frances Thomas Literary Park. These scholarship monies from the Foundation include the Hopkinsville Rotary Scholars Program, but also include monies to support students interested in agriculture technology, economics, nursing and allied health, textbook scholarships, and students who have been historically underserved or underrepresented.

With a budget deficit looming at the college, it is more important than ever to engage in private donor cultivation, according to college president Jim Selbe. “The Foundation plays an increasingly important role in resource development for the college, and we are grateful for its continued efforts to provide a margin of excellence to our students and to our institution,” Selbe noted.

Jones says that tickets to the gala are still available by calling the college at 270-707-3733. Cost is $50.00 per person, and includes appetizers and a gourmet meal prepared by Chef Jettinghoff using many Kentucky Proud ingredients including beef from Hamptons Meats and local eggplant for the vegetarian entrée. HCC’s Institutional Advancement Officer, Yvette Eastham states that there is still time to give an item to be auctioned. “We like to have varied items so that everyone who is in the buying mood can make a purchase, whether it is a flat-screen television, the latest iPad or tickets to the Alahambra, gift certificates for meals or oil changes, or trendy jewelry. We’d like everyone to leave with something, but most importantly, to leave with the knowledge that they have helped to grow their community college,” she concluded.

The evening will also feature students of the college serving as Ambassadors, to assist with the proceedings. All monies raised go directly to student scholarships.

Reservations are required for the Gala, and cost is $50 per person. Call 707-3733 for more information.

Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) was recently approved by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents to implement two new degree programs, Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Health Science Technology and Associate in Applied Science in Medical Information Technology, starting in the fall term of 2012, which begins Monday, August 13.

We are excited to be able to offer these two new areas of study, stated HCC President Jim Selbe. “The college is sensitive to the needs of area employers and students. We feel that these new programs will give students marketable skills that local employers are searching for.”

The AAS in health science technology (HST) is designed to prepare students for entry-level career opportunities in the field of healthcare and health-related services. Many of the general education and core courses are required for completion of varied professional health programs. These include diagnostic medical sonography, medical assisting, nursing, physical therapy assistant, radiography, respiratory care, and surgical technology. The HST program also provides a smooth transition to an allied health or nursing program for students that select to expand upon their education. A certificate for pharmacy technician is also available under this program.

HST graduates could be employed in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, health departments, assisted living, skilled nursing and other healthcare facilities. Careers include medical and clinical laboratory technicians, Medicaid nurse aid, advanced nurse aid, phlebotomist and pharmacy technicians. According to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2018, average annual wages for health science technology professionals range from $22,400 to $27,500.

The AAS in medical information technology (MIT) is designed to prepare students for careers such as medical secretary, medical transcriptionist, medical coding specialist, medical office manager, and medical receptionist or hospital admission specialist. According to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2018, average annual wages in the medical information technology professionals range from $26,000 to $31,700.

Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) Religion Professor Dr. Ken Casey will be taking 11 people with him on Friday for a study abroad experience in India. The group’s homebase will be in Dharamsala, India at the foothills of the Himalayas, but they will also be traveling throughout the region. The trip will last from June 29 through July 21.

The backbone of the trip, built upon the idea of compassionate tourism, is structured around a service learning project through Lha Charitable Trust, a Tibetan run social work agency. Group members will each be paired with an adult Tibetan Refugee, enrolled in Lha’s school, for a mutual learning experience each morning while in Dharamsala. Participants will teach conversational English skills as they learn about Tibetan culture and life. “The Refugees who cross the board from China need English to get around India,” explains Dr. Casey. “English teachers, especially those who are native speaking, are prized for their knowledge.”

Afternoons and side trips will be spent with, Tsering Phuntsok, a practicing Buddhist monk for more than 23 years who has visited Hopkinsville and western Kentucky giving lectures for a month over the last three years. He will introduce the group to Tibetan religion, culture and the natural beauty in the region. A visit with award winning author of “The Voice that Remembers” Ama Adhe is planned. Ms. Adhe’s tenacious struggle to remain human in the face of inhuman torture and deprivation while imprisoned by the Chinese for 27 years inspires those who visit with her, and she now works in helping refugees settle in Dharamsala. Visits with monks, nuns, hermits, thankha painters and outings to temples and monasteries are also planned. Participants will also visit the Holy Lake and hike in the Himalayas. It is possible that participants will also be able to hear the Dalai Lama, who gives public teachings on regular intervals in the town.

Student Email to Receive Enhancements on June 11

HCC is Upgrading Student Email.

In order to better serve students, HCC is changing email services to Microsoft O365 for Education. On Monday, June 11, 2012, HCC student mailbox(es) will be moved to O365. Students may experience some email issues on June 11 as HCC makes the changes.

Accessing Your Email:
Students can access their email through a new website link. Starting on Monday, June 11, students may also reach that link by clicking on the “Email” link at the top of the college website and choosing “Student Email” on the following page.

Mailbox Size has Increased!
Student mailbox size has increased! Students will get a warning that the mailbox is almost full at 900 MB. Students will be prohibited from sending messages when 950 MB is reached. At 1 GB, students will be prohibited from sending and receiving email.

Mobile Setup
If students have setup their mobile phone with the KCTCS email system prior to being moved to O365, they will now need to setup the phone to work with O365. The directions can be found here.

Password Reset:
The password reset functionality within O365 will not work to reset your KCTCS network password. Students may want to enroll in the password reset portal in order to reset your password. Students need to enroll before their password expires. This tool will allow students to change or reset their KCTCS password. Students can also use the User Account Center located here.

Questions?
Students with any questions regarding the email changes may contact HCC’s IT help desk at (270) 707-3770 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Are You Ready To Graduate?

According to HCC Registrar Melissa Stevenson, 713 students have applied for 1,544 credentials - 655 two-year degrees, 842 certificates, and 47 diplomas. Compared with 2011 statistics, HCC has experienced a 22 percent increase in graduate candidates and a 21 percent increase in credentials to be awarded. “We are expecting over 200 students to participate in this year’s commencement ceremony, which will be a record for HCC,” explained Chief Student Affairs Officer Dr. Jason Warren.

The college will also have a significant number of military students graduating. Approximately 20 active duty service members and 90 veterans have applied to graduate. For the first time, these students will be identifiable by red, white and blue honor cords. There will also be an empty chair in the front row that symbolizes the members of our armed forces who are listed as POWs and MIAs.

A celebration of a diverse group of graduates is set to take place on the campus of Hopkinsville Community College on Tuesday, April 17, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Families and friends of over 150 GED (General Educational Development) graduates will celebrate this milestone achievement and have the opportunity of learning about moving to the next level with the Go2College Adult College Fair. The Go2College Adult College Fair targets these GED graduates, and offers the opportunity for participants from across the community to learn about applying for college admissions and financial aid as well as learning about high wage/high demand career training available at HCC. The College Fair will begin at 3:00 p.m. and run through the graduation event, ending at 9:00 p.m. Staff from the college will be available to evaluate transcripts for students who may have already accumulated some college credit. “Sometimes all a person needs is some expert advice and a little motivation to get back in school to finish out a degree or credential”, stated Kanya Allen, the college’s coordinator of career services. “We hope that this event targeted to adults will help them begin a path to realize their goals”, she concluded.

The theme of the conference was "Officer Survival: Staying Safe on the Street".

The students from HCC competed in five (5) academic competitions; firearms completion, crime scene processing and investigations. Students across the United States convened in Cincinnati for competitions within three divisions; college lower and upper classmen including graduate students, and field professionals. The physical agility category was divided by gender and age; under 25; 26 to 38; and 39 and over. Ms. Latoyer Brewer of HCC took 3rd place in women’s physical agility in the 26 to 38 age category.

Of the competitive events at the national conference, the Crime Scene Processing is the most vigorous, no doubt aided by the influence of popular television series such as CSI, Body of Proof, NCIS and Castle. This is the area the students most want to win. Over 100 teams participated in the crime scene processing competition. The team of HCC students John Suiter, Ryan Langhi and Clayton Olive took second place, lower division in the US, successfully competing against in-state rival Eastern Kentucky University and other four year programs.

HCC, for the first time since beginning to attend these conferences brought home TWO (2) trophies. Greg Bridgeman, program coordinator of the HCC’s Criminal Justice Program stated, “These wins put Hopkinsville Community College and our program on the national map with national bragging rights!”
Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) staff member Kristy Howell is conducting a research study to examine water consumption habits and attitudes at Western Kentucky University (WKU) and HCC. Ms. Howell is encouraging participation in an online survey that will take about half an hour.

Howell is performing this research with fellow students Leslie Nichols and Cristin Pullman as part of their graduate work in Social Responsibility and Sustainable Communities at WKU (IRB # 12-175). “Research participants will help us learn more about how students, faculty, and staff view bottled water consumption and tap water quality,” stated Howell. “In the long run, I would hope that this research would lead to an appreciation of how students view water quality and how their perceptions are reflected in the amount of money spent on bottled water products. Currently, many students at Hopkinsville and Western rely on bottled water for hydration; with both campuses working in their institutional sustainability plans to install water bottle refilling stations, our research will allow us to establish a baseline for possible changes in behavior as our students appreciate this new opportunity.”

Hopkinsville faculty, staff, and students completing the questionnaire will be entered in a drawing for a $30 gift certificate for lunch at Harper House, courtesy of the Hopkinsville Community College Foundation.

Please feel free to complete the survey.

PTK Scholar Forum

Dr. Ken Casey will be leading the discussion on Voyeurism. From that perspective voyeuri...sm is less about sex and more about "objectification," power, control and "othering".
